Mike Lynskey Honoured with AIANZ Individual Award for Exceptional Contribution to Aviation
In a distinguished ceremony at the 2024 AIANZ Conference held in Christchurch this August, Mike Lynskey was presented with the prestigious AIANZ Individual Award. This accolade recognises the remarkable contributions an individual has made to the aviation industry in New Zealand, highlighting their dedication, high standards, and inspiring impact.
Mike Lynskey’s career spans an impressive 50 years, marked by his significant roles both domestically and internationally in aviation. His journey began in the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF), where he served for 21 years, honing his skills as an aeronautical engineer and demonstrating exemplary leadership and personnel management. This foundational experience paved the way for his subsequent achievements in the civil aviation sector.
In the mid-1990s, Mike transitioned to a pivotal role with Aviation Services Ltd (ASL), which later rebranded as Aspeq Ltd. Under his guidance as General Manager and CEO, Aspeq expanded its reach, revolutionising aviation assessment services for both flight crews and maintenance engineers. Mike’s visionary leadership was instrumental in transforming Aspeq into a global enterprise, securing contracts in Australia and forming international partnerships.
Mike's contributions extend beyond his corporate achievements. His involvement with the Aviation Industry Association (AIA) and his current presidency of the New Zealand Division of the Royal Aeronautical Society further underscores his dedication to the aviation community. As he approaches semi-retirement this year, Mike’s legacy within the sector is undeniable.
In his nomination, Gordon Alexander, Aviation Manager at Aspeq, and Hamish Findlay, Chief Executive of Aspeq, detailed Mike's extraordinary work and the significant impact of his contributions. They praised his extensive technical expertise, his ability to manage complex stakeholder relationships, and his commitment to fostering talent within the industry.
Mike's high standards and unwavering commitment have set a benchmark in the aviation sector. His approach to leadership—emphasising the importance of listening, understanding, and integrating diverse perspectives—has inspired many. Mike’s dedication to mentoring and empowering emerging professionals has significantly contributed to the growth and maturity of New Zealand’s aviation industry.
Reflecting on his award, Mike Lynskey expressed his gratitude, stating, "I am honoured to receive this award, but the reason I am up here is because of the fantastic company and team that have worked at Aspeq. Aspeq was always a family. I remember Brian Roulston, Chairman of the board at the time, said there are two important things in business: 'Look after your people and your customers, and everything else will look after itself.' I have since lived by that philosophy."
The AIANZ Individual Award is a testament to Mike Lynskey’s exceptional career and his lasting impact on the aviation industry in New Zealand. His dedication and leadership continue to inspire current and future professionals in the field.
